5 traditional cakes from 5 countries

October 27th, 2015

The most first thought that comes to our minds when we talk of different lands is their culture and tradition. Each country has its own wonderful tradition of clothing, music, food, etc. Cakes are a favourite among people globally, and each country, surprisingly, has its own traditional cake. Here we are taking you on a virtual tour of the variations in cake gastronomy of different countries.
1.     Galette des Roise – France

When translated into English, Galette des Roise would mean “the king’s cake.” The cake, traditionally, is consumed after Christmas celebrations, during first week of January, but of late it has gained so much popularity that bakeries have no choice but sell it all through December and January. It is made with several layers of puff pastry and topped using powder sugar and it is wrapped with almond cream.

2.    Black Forest Cherry Cake – Germany

This cake is very traditional form coming from south-east Germany, specifically the Black Forest region. It is popularly believed that the original cake came from Switzerland, but Germans perfected it and turned it to as famous that it is nowadays.
The cake is made of many layers of chocolate cake, which are separated by cherries. It is topped using whipped cream, more cherries and chocolate shavings for decoration purposes. There is also a Swedish version to the cake, although it does not have much to do with the actual German recipe because it is made using whipped cream and meringue.

3.    Revani – Turkey

Turkey, as well as the Arabic world, is very well known for Balvakia, which is a variety of sweets prepared from dried fruits and layered with honey and pastry. However, the country has many other kinds of desserts and sweets, although none are as well-known as first one.

Revani, a moist cake, is elaborated using semolina, which is a bit of lemon. Also, orange syrup is used to make what would otherwise be a dry cake in a tastier and smoother dish.

4.    Mochi – Japan

The Mochi  is a traditional Japanese dessert and is  made of rice paste which is usually made on New Year’s Eve, but it can be found all through  the year in various varieties such as ice creams or also soups. Considering the fact that rice paste is moulded easily and can be mixed with a large range of ingredients, the variety of a Mochi cake can be unlimited.

5.    Mawa Cake – India

Mawa cakes are made with milk and given a touch of nuts like cashews and almonds and lots of cardamom. The Mawa, a sweet ingredient, is solidified milk, which is obtained via the process of cooking the milk so slowly that the liquid begins to evaporate. The Cake especially is traditional in the city of Mumbai, which has various cafes serving it. It is also prepared in the state of Gujarat.

You must be wondering how you can get a taste of the various cakes from around the world. Tough question! But if you want to taste the various cakes from all over UK, or send cakes, cakes by post is at our service.

Amazing Ways to Celebrate Christmas

July 29th, 2015

Come holiday season and particularly Christmas, there is an air of festivity and bonhomie in the air. You can enjoy all the traditional ways to celebrate Christmas like putting up Christmas tree, lighting up your home, singing carols, exchanging gifts and enjoying a Christmas feast.

But there are some different ways to celebrate Christmas. Here are a few ideas:

  • Avoid the gift exchange: When you have large family exchanging gifts can break the bank. So this Christmas, why not skip this tradition and replace it with a common celebration-like going together for a movie, a play, a game or a restaurant.
  • Tasty strings: Get together as family or friends and string up some cranberries and popcorn and enjoy watching an animated Xmas special like a Charlie Brown Xmas.
  • Go the cultural way: How about celebrating Christmas just like a particular culture, say Swedish or Irish with its own special activities and treats. This will be a really interesting experience for the whole family.
  • Live nativity scene: Get your youth group to stage a live nativity scene in your church on a particular day and get an admiring audience from near and far.
  • Photo fun: For some nostalgic fun moments, why not take out photos of old Christmas celebrations and share a fun time with friends and family.
  • Take a vacation: How about leaving your home for a small getaway. It may be to a beach resort or a mountain cabin or somewhere the whole family can enjoy.
  • Watch Christmas lights: Pile up your whole family into a car and go round the town watching Christmas lights in homes, shops and malls.
  • Treat teachers: Place anonymous notes inside the tables of your teachers expressing your gratitude, in order to make their Christmas special.
  • Craft a nativity scene: Make a nativity scene out of snow or out of sand if you live near a beach.
  • Volunteer: Extend your helping hand like providing bath to all animals in a local animal shelter. You can also volunteer at a local shelter for homeless, aged or ill persons and make the day of the inmates really special. Buy cake online for them.
  • Change main course: The usual course for Christmas is Turkey or ham. Why not go in for something different like a heavy brunch or Christmas chicken. Why not go in for sea-food buffet?
  • Shopping day: Go Christmas shopping for parents with your siblings. After you have bought all the gifts, rest some place to watch other Christmas shoppers.
  • Spend time with grandparents:  Make a meal or hot cocoa for your grandparents and listen to their stories of past Christmases.
  • Silent prayer time: Visit your church when it is empty, light a candle and spend a quiet hour of prayer and reflection.
  • Family treat: Do something as a family group like organizing a church pageant or building a float for the town parade.
  • Twelve days of Christmas: Instead of focusing on Christmas day, organize a Christmas week where you give each other small but special gifts in the 12 days before Christmas.

These are some interesting ideas for celebrating this Christmas.

Tips for a unique birthday cake for kids

July 24th, 2015

Making a birthday cake for kids might seem simple but it isn’t. Your kids expect a lot from their birthday cakes, and you need to know their choices well. You need to add some designing techniques and decorating skills to the cakes to perfect them and to make them unique. So here are some tips to make the right cake for children.

Stick with basic flavors: Every kid loves chocolate and vanilla. So, it is the best if you stick to that and concentrate on making an out and out chocolate or vanilla cake. Though kids are becoming adventurous with tastes these days yet these two flavors are always a win-win situation when baking for a kid.

Make it colorful: Yes, lots and lots of color. If you want you can design it too with their favorite color. Add sprinkles, rainbow colors, make buttercream of different colors between the layers of the cake. This might take time but it is all worth it in the end. No parent wants to see their child disappointed. So throw in some bright colors and bring a smile to their faces.

Make it sweet: Do not opt for dark chocolate for a kid. They love milk chocolates and sweet things. You can add cookies, chocolate pieces and many other sweetish things to make the cake sweet and delicious. Keep in mind the preference of the child and bake it. Make fun designs with candies and chocolate icing.

Customize it: You can make a cake with a template in mind. You can design it and personalize it with their favorite movie, character, color, football team or toy. You can make cartoon characters or their own pictures on the cakes too. A lot of times, people also design animal shaped cakes. You can do that too. It will take tons of time but the effort will pay off in the end. If not, you can always order it online or buy it from the store. Personalize the cake as much as you can. Kids love that!

Create it magically: You can add layers, colors, decorations and you can experiment further. You can make a phone shaped cake or a waffle shaped cake. A well-known illusion cake is the waffle cake with a hot air balloon floating above it. Everything is edible and looks incredible.

While you are creating cakes, do not forget fancy candles too. A birthday cake is incomplete without candles. Place a single candle on the cake so that the cake isn’t too spoil with tons of candles on it. Whatever you make, keep in mind to start early if you know it will take tons of time. If you are not much of a baker or do not have so much time to make all this, then you can order birthday cakes online too. You will find a wide range of different shapes, styles and customized cakes on the internet. So, do not worry or hassle with the birthday cake. Internet is here to help!
